Here's a picture of fiambre that I described in the All Saint's Day/Day of the Dead post.  I stole it from a friend.  Its purple because of the beets.

Also, I had another interesting Guatemalan culinary experience the other day...chicharrones.  I went into the kitchen of my homestay the other day and my house mom and a cousin were at the table eating something and they offered some to me.  It turned out to be chicharron-- or fried pork skin.  I know some of you are probably thinking that's disgusting, but if you block out of your head what it actually is, and sprinkle it with some lime, scoop on some avocado, and wrap it all up in a warm corn tortilla, it is pretty good.

In other news, I survived my first solo taxi experience this morning.  And I didn't get ripped off.  I must have fallen asleep in the shower or something because when I got out, I realized it was 7:05-- the time I am usually LEAVING the house to catch the teacher bus to school.   I wasn't going to be late to school, but I immediately realized I wasn't going to make the bus today. Which was a little bit stressful because I would be responsible for getting myself to school.  I chose taxi, although way more expensive, a lot less hectic than walking all the way to the right chicken bus stop and catching that to school.  So I called my principal to let her know not to make the bus wait for me.  Good thing I did, because I woke her up!!   Her alarm hadn't gone off!  Yikes.  Today was just kind of an off day for everyone.  So I asked her how much a taxi should cost, and she told me.  And I got one all by myself, communicated what I needed to in Spanish all on my own, and he didn't even try to charge me more than he should (which most of them do.)  And I ended up making it to school about 5 minutes after the teacher bus.
