So my Spanish is not that great. I've been struggling. I'm hoping to start taking classes sometime soon, but in the meantime I've just been using the limited amount I know. And last night I had a humorous little encounter with my host mom. She doesn't speak any English, and I was trying to tell her that I rode the chicken bus home (see yesterday's post). I was trying really hard to speak Spanish and I had no idea how to translate chicken bus, so I just said "autobus de pollo". (Autobus meaning bus, and pollo meaning chicken) Well, she just looked at me like I was crazy and had no clue what I was talking about. I mean, chickens and buses don't usually go together. So we summoned Juliet to try to explain, and it turns out they just call it "chicken bus" here, no translation needed. We all got a laugh at my attempt.
Anyway, last night two other teachers and I went out to a little place to watch the Xela soccer team (Xelaju) play on TV. It was funny because on the commercials they changed to this crazy music video station and we got to watch all these old American videos, and some new. It was definitely fun to get out of the house and experience a little of the town. Plus, you've got to love town pride. They had to play in Guatemala City because ESPN ruled that Xela's stadium didn't have good enough lighting. But now that they are out of the tournament they are in, they should be playing here now. Can't wait for that experience!
School is going well-- I finally got to start decorating my classroom! So fun! I promise pictures are coming soon, I just didn't want to post any until it is all finished :)
