Written Aug. 4

Things are continuing to go by smoothly and pretty rapidly at that! The majority of my day is spent at school with the other teachers having orientation meetings. Personal highlight of today's meeting:
During the discussion (we meet in the library) the principal pointed out that a hummingbird had flown in. Right as we all turned to look, it flew straight into a window and with a loud thud, immediately flopped down. It didn't move and we all thought we had just witnessed its sudden death, but when someone went to remove him, it sprung back to life and flew around the library some more. A little distracting to our meetings, but entertaining nonetheless.
After our meetings, we then have some time to work in our classrooms, but it’s never enough! There is so much organizing, cleaning, planning and prep to be done. We were given the teacher's editions of the textbooks and have to go through all the curriculum and standards. By next Friday we have to have our year long outlines, broken down by week, for each subject. It’s a little overwhelming, but I know I will be grateful for the planning as the year progresses.

It’s currently pouring down rain. Its rainy season here, and so far it hasn't been that bad. It has rained every day, but only during the late afternoons/evenings so it hasn't affected much. Although the power went out in my home stay last night, and I hear it’s a pretty common experience. Just went out right this very moment actually! Haha.
Anyway, after school today, my housemate Juliet showed me around the town a bit. I had already done this once with the other teachers, but I still don't know my way around :) She showed me a great little coffee place-- and it even offers free salsa lessons every Wednesday!
I think I'm adjusting okay so far. I don't know if it has really hit me that this is home for the next 10 months. And everyone always says the first few weeks of living abroad are the honeymoon phase, and it’s not until after that the culture shock really starts to hit. But I'm keeping an open mind, and I really am excited about living here.
I've had a warm shower the past 2 days, which has been very nice. And the food is good too. Breakfast and lunch are usually pretty similar every day. Breakfast is cereal, coffee and occasionally some kind of fruit or toast. Dinner is some form of eggs and beans and rice. I've been remembering "Beans and Rice" week from during LIFT! Haha. Who knew it would have helped prepare me for this! Lunch is the bigger meal, and I have had something different every day. So far I've liked everything I've tasted!

I’m sure I’ll have more tomorrow—One of the other teachers and I are planning to stay late at school and try to catch a chicken bus home. Should be an adventure!
